25 Nov 2023 - I am trying to update and expand these old Rootsweb pages and most have been greatly expanded in the past few years. Recently I had to move my website from Rootsweb where it was for 20+ years to my own paid webspace. In 2024 Rootsweb is locking down old websites so they can no longer be updated so the site needed to be moved.

I do as much real research as possible and take the time to track down source documents and draw conclusions based on actual documents, circumstantial evidence, cluster data and now DNA evidence. I have been researching my ancestry off and on since 1991. Many lines are very difficult to research and there are still many brick walls. I am on Ancestry and my main tree is "Lance's family tree" I have added links to some new pages attempting to document possible DNA segment triangulations.

DNA triangulation:

DNA triangulation can be used work out which specific DNA segments are common to specific ancestral lines or ancestral couples. The method involves comparing chromosome match data in a spreadsheet. Currently Ancestry has the largest DNA database but it does NOT let you see the actual segment data. It also adds smaller likely erroneous segments matches into your total centimorgan count which can make distant matches report closer than they really are. The only method to obtain and view actual Ancestry segment data is to download your DNA data and then upload that file to a 3rd party website like Gedmatch (preferred) or FTDNA. While Gedmatch is a smaller database than Ancestry it contains user-submitted kits from multiple DNA websites. The steps are:

Download you DNA data from Ancestry. On your DNA "Settings" page (see above) you scroll all the way down to the section that says "Actions". Under that is "Download Raw DNA Data". Click "Download" to download a .zip file of your raw DNA data. The ZIP file is simply a space compressed version of a very large text file that contains your raw DNA data. Do not UNZIP or try to open the ZIP file or it may be damaged.
Upload this ZIP file to Gedmatch. First you have to setup a Gedmatch account. Basic analysis features are free and more advanced analysis features are by subscription of only $10 a month. The upload process will give you a Gedmatch Kit Number. This is the number you will use to do kit analysis. It takes a little time to process your DNA and create a match database for it. Gedmatch matches are created by analyzing DNA kits submitted by people from other sites that allows export of DNA data like Ancestry, FTDNA, 23 and Me, National Geographic and other sources. There are also ancient Human DNA Kits posted.

Gedmatch is open source which means you can compare your DNA kit (or any other's) directly with all other submitted DNA kits. All you need to compare is the Gedmatch Kit Number. Many people doing DNA triangulation will post their Gedmatch kit numbers in discussion boards and emails.
Move Gedmatch data to a spreadsheet. At Gedmatch, FTDNA or 23 and Me you can export your segment data to a CSV file (comma separated value database) which can be easily imported into a spreadsheet program like Excel or even online at Google Docs.

1. If you want to see matches arranged by segment positions you sort the columns first by Segment start position (low to high) and then by Chromosome number (low to high). This will arrange the database so that you can see groups of matches based on matching segments. As you add notes to obvious known matches the surrounding matches that have similar segment positions are likely related through the same ancestor or a generation up.

2. If you want to see matches arranged by match strength (and therefore closeness) you arrange the Centimorgan column high to low. The top matches will often by obvious known cousins especially if you have already identified many people on Ancestry already. Unfortunately it's sometimes hard or impossible to match a Gedmatch users with an Ancestry account to compare tree. Gedmatch DOES have the ability to add an old fashioned Gedcom ancestral file but most people do not add one.
