Lydia Barnes Burris

Lydia Barnes Burris was born abut 1789 or 1790 in South Carolina.  She married Walter Burris on 28 May 1807 in Clark county, Kentucky.  The Burris family moved to Missouri in 1809 settling first at the Loutre Island community in Montgomery county, Missouri.  A year or two later they moved west to what would become Boonville, Missouri.  Walter Burris supposedly built one the first houses there.  Walter Burris died in 1839 in Jackson county, Missouri and afterward Lydia lived with her son William B Burris.  She died sometime after 1860 but it is not known where or when.

Lydia's parents were probably from the Barnes family of Estill county, Kentucky that came from North Carolina. In Estill county there is a Barnes Mountain and a Barnes cemetery. At this point the likely suspect for Lydia's father is Zachariah Barnes but he could also be an uncle instead.

The Burris family (Walter Burris, Isaiah Burris, David Burris) can be shown to have a close proximity to Zachariah Barnes in southern Clark (later Estill) county, Kentucky.  Zachariah Barnes later bought 40 acres on Woodward Creek in 1837.  This is the only place that Walter Burris could have met a young Lydia Barnes and eventually married in May 1807 when she was 17 or 18 years old.  See the following two court orders that prove both families lived fairly close to each other:

July 17, 1809 - Estill county, Kentucky - Court Order Book, page 180
"Ordered that Isaiah Burress be appointed surveyor of the road leading from the Flatwood's Meeting House to the Red River Iron works to the cross road of the Woodward's Creek road with the said road near the Widow Boxes in place of Thomas Tribble who is exempt therefrom "

" Ordered that Zachariah Barnes be appointed surveyor of the road leading from the mouth of Woodward's Creek to the Widow Boxes [Mary Box] in place of Augustus Davis who is exempt therefrom and James McGee from thence the dividing Ridge in place of said Davis who is exempt therefrom. " 

Zachariah Barnes would have needed to have lived close enough to take over from Augustus Davis.  Previous research in 2015-2017 established close associations between Walter Burris, Isaiah Burris, David Burris, Mary Box, Muke Box [Mary's son] and there are also tangential connections to Thomas Tribble and Augustus Davis.  All of these people knew each other and lived near each other if not in fact shared or worked the same farms/plantations near Woodward Creek.

 In 1808 Estill county, Kentucky was created from the southern part of Clark county, Kentucky and the eastern part of Madison county, Kentucky. 

Woodward Creek is located in the area that used to be part of Clark county.

Purpose:


The purpose of this page is to document the apparent genetic connections between Lydia Barnes Burris and the family of Zachariah Burris.  The method used is triangulation of the extensive autosomal connections between descendants of Walter & Lydia (Barnes) Burris and descendants of Zachariah Barnes.

While the autosomal matches below do not directly confirm a match to that ancestor the amount of shared matches is strong evidence that is where the match probably lies.  Autosomal DNA become far less useable for DNA matching after a certain number of generations.

"For genealogical relationships between second cousins once removed and 5th cousins a more careful approach is necessary and data needs to be collected from multiple family members.... The extensive cross matching between descendants of most branches of BOTH families also helps prove the matching via this writer (Lance L Hall) is probably not coincidental via another ancestral line.

Female line descendants of Lydia Barnes Burris are needed to take a Mitochondrial DNA test to hopefully provide clues to the maternal ancestry of Lydia Barnes Burris.

The test is available through FamilyTreeDNA but not Ancestry.com.

11 Nov 2019 update:
Two female line descendants of Mary Burris Crabtree Williams (1814-1892) and Prudence Burris Flanery (c.1823-1870+) have been MtDNA matched to each other using the Mitochondrial Full Sequence tests available through the FTDNA website.  Using the two matched testers Lydia Barnes Burris' MtDNA Haplogroup in now known to be K1a15 a specific subgroup of Haplogroup K. The K1a15 subgroup is found in Scotland and Ireland. This tells us that Lydia’s maternal line likely has origins in Ireland or Scotland. 

According to the FTDNA website a Mitochondrial Full Sequence test match indicates there is a 50% chance the common ancestor was within 5 generations (125 years) and a 95% chance the common ancestor was within 22 generations (550 years)
