Joseph
Williams was born before 1784. Joseph was likely a brother of
Richard Williams. He may also be related
to a John Williams Sr Joseph married Mary Hendrickson in March 1808 in Cumberland County, Kentucky. Joseph served in the War of 1812 under Captain Wiley Huddleston and Colonel Raulston in the 3rd Regiment West Tennessee Militia. Joseph died "7 Jan 1815" near New Orleans per Mary's War of 1812 pension application. It's likely he actually died on 8 Jan 1815 in the Battle of New Orleans which was the last battle of the War of 1812. He would have been one of the last 60-70 Americans to die in that war. |
Census and tax lists: 1810 KY, Cumberland Co., p 741 (next to Richard Williams) 1813 bought land from John Grogan (sold by Levin Killman in 1837) 1815 Joseph dies in War of 1812 ************ There was another Joseph Williams alive in 1823 who testified in a court case. |
Mother: |
Mary
Hendrickson was born about 1788 in Kentucky (per siblings) or North Carolina (per
census).
She may have been a daughter of John Hendrickson and had brothers Aaron
Hendrickson (1793), Separate Hendrickson (1791) and William Hendrickson. There is an X-DNA match between two
of Mary's descendants and a descendant of Separate Hendrickson. Mary remarried to Levin Killman in 1819 in Overton County, Tennessee. They had six children. The Eastern Cherokee application of her grandson Stephen Alford Killman lists her as a "Hendricks" but the marriage bond to Joseph Williams has her correctly as Hendrickson. 2021 Theory: Mary "Hendricks" was first married to Joseph Williams by 1810. 2022 Mary "Killmon" (formerly widow of Joseph Williams) received Bounty Land for Joseph's military service. Thanks KarenG. July 2022: Mary's War of 1812 pension file was received and it completely validates the previous year of research. |

The identical stop and start points is good evidence this survey data is describing the same piece of land or part of the same :-) It would be helpful to find survey images for Samuel Eldridge and Jesse Stark's land. Jesse Stark married Dolly Grogin. |

1814-1815 | In the National Archived there exists a War of 1812 pension application for
a Mary Williams, widow of Joseph Williams. This Joseph Williams was in the
Tennessee Volunteers. The application is an "Old War Widow" application,
number 12037 (or 121037). [LDS

1820 | 1820 Federal Census Joseph Williams is not recorded in the 1820 census so he may have died before 1820 or just was not recorded. He also may have divorced Mary. There IS a record of a Joseph Williams testifying in 1823. This writer theorizes that Joseph Williams' ex-wife or widow Mary remarried to Levin Killman. The evidence is in 1837 Levin Killman sells Joseph's land in 1837. Levin was married to a Mary "Hendricks" by 1820 and Mary had an older daughter Sarah Williams Jennings born 1815-1820. This writer theorizes that Mary's children by Joseph Williams were: Nancy Hopper (est. 1809), John Williams (1811) and Sarah Jennings (1815+). Another daughter may have been either Margaret Watson or Mary Willis. |
