Father

Reason Halsell was born about 1772 in South Carolina.  He was the son of Thomas Halsell and _________. He married Elizabeth Oldham on  15 June 1799 in Clark county, Kentucky.  Reason was living in Cumberland county, KY from at least 1803 to 1811. Reason received a land grant in Posey county, Indiana about 1816. He presumably lived mainly in Posey county after this point but he also had land in Coahoma county, Mississippi down the Mississippi River. 

Reason died about 1837 possibly in Posey county, Indiana. His children lived in Coahoma county, MS and just across the river in Phillips county, Arkansas.

The Halsell Y-DNA haplogroup is R-M269.

Elizabeth Oldham was born 1771-1780 (c. 1777).  She was the daughter of Richard Oldham and Ann Pepper.  Elizabeth died after 1830. [notes]
Son Alfred Halsell was born 1801-10 in Clark county, Kentucky. He married Peggy Fairlee about 1831 in Vanderburg county, Indiana. He married Elizabeth Haynes on 11 July 1839 in Posey county, Indiana. Alfred died on 6 Jan. 1846 in Phillips county, Arkansas.

  • Sarah Halsell was born about 1836. She married James Casey on 19 April 1854 in Phillips county, Arkansas.

Son Jehoida Halsell was born about 1805 in Clark county, Kentucky. Jehoida died 6 April 1866 in Coahoma county, Mississippi.

Dau. Elizabeth Halsell was born 1811-20. She married James Cochran on 13 April 1837 in Phillips county, Arkansas.

Son Andrew Jackson? Halsell was born about 1815 in Tennessee. He married "Mrs. Elizabeth Stanley", original maiden name not known. She apparently had died by 1850 as she is not listed on the census. Andrew apparently remarried to another woman because another child is mentioned in his brother Jehoida's will and a family source says there were 13 children. It is not know when or where Andrew died, only that it was before 1866. An "A J Halsell" served in the Civil War and died 13 Nov 1862 in Knoxville, TN. The service records do not give full name or age.

  • Susan Halsell was born about 1841 Coahoma county, Mississippi.
  • John Calvin Halsell was born about 1843 in Coahoma county, Mississippi. He married Mary "Polly" Ann Deaton, June 4, 1863 Williamson county, Illinois. John died about 1885 possibly in Searcy county, Arkansas. Sarah died about 1894 possibly near Stonewall, Oklahoma.

    • Sarah Jane Halsell was born 25 June 1864 in Williamson county, Illinois. She married Francis M Adams on 24 Jan 1886 in Searcy county, Arkansas. Sarah died 15 Aug 1943 near Castle, Okfuskee county, Oklahoma.
    • Louisa W. Halsell was born 16 Dec 1866 in Illinois. Louisa died 6 April 1942 in Arkansas and was buried Middleton cem., Conway county, Arkansas.
    • Amanda Melvina Halsell was born 28 Feb 1868 in Johnson county, Illinois. She married Moses Delford Hall on 21 Oct 1887 in Conway county, Arkansas. Amanda died 16 Aug 1923 and was buried Foster cem., Van Buren county, Arkansas.
    • Thomas Jefferson Halsell was born Oct. 1869 Arkansas. He married Laura Brummet on 26 June 1897 in Searcy county, Arkansas. Thomas died 11 Nov 1948 Fittstown, Oklahoma and was buried in Rosedale cem., Ada, Oklahoma.
    • Martha Ellen Halsell was born 7 April 1871 in Arkansas. She married Fountain Pitts Armstrong on 23 Aug 1894 in Stonewall, Oklahoma. Martha died 16 Aug 1920 in Walden, Colorado and was buried in Walden.
    • Tennessee Halsell was born about 1873 Arkansas. She married ? Brent. She married James Thomas Hallmark Oct. 28, 1905 Pontotoc county, Oklahoma. Tennessee died 25 March 1953 in Lubbock, Texas.
    • Frank Elbert Halsell was born 18 Jan 1875 in Searcy county, Arkansas. He married Irene Rosalee Clairday. Frank was killed on 15 July 1921 in Desha county, Arkansas.
    • Winnie Brunette Halsell was born 11 Feb 1878 Jackson, Sebastian county, Arkansas. She married Squire William "Bill" Flippo on 12 April 1895 in Boone county.  She married John W Murphy on 1 March 1904 near Moody, Oklahoma. She also later married John Bridge and Sangmon Childers.  Winnie died 15 Oct 1945 in Yuba county, California.
    • John R. Halsell was born about April 1880 Arkansas.
    • Margaret Permelia Josephine Halsell was born 5 Aug 1882 in Searcy county, Arkansas. She married Robert Lee Mannon on 5 Jan 1897 in Stonewall, Oklahoma. Margaret died 28 July 1950 in Oktaha, Muskogee county, Oklahoma and was buried in Hillcrest cem., Weleetka, Oklahoma.
