"Abstracts of Colonial Wills of the State of Georgia 1733-1777"

John Barnard, Wilmington Island, Savannah, Gent. Wife: Jane, all horses, cattle, slaves (except Indian slave, Harry), if she remains a widow she is to get all the profits of all the moneys that shall be raised from the stock and debts which I have in the Indian trade, for the maintenance and the education of my two sons, Timothy and William until they are twenty-one years of age. When the youngest son is twenty-one, each son is to have one fourth of stock and money. Other one half to wife if she remains a widow. On her death her share to be divided between the sons. Son: Timothy, entitled by deed of gift from Richard Kent 500 acres of land on Wilmington Island. Son: William, tract of land, 500 acres, on Wilmington Island. Indian slave: Harry, his freedom, after two years of service to Jane Barnard, or upon her death if it is sooner. Exors: Noble Jones, Esq. of near Savannah; Samuel Marcer, Savannah. Wit: William Stephens, Newdigate Stephens, Charles Watson.

William Bradley, Lee Street, Red Lyon Square, County of Middlesex, Gent. Wife: Elizabeth, household goods, plate, linen, furniture, all for the extent of her life; to son, William, at her death. Son: William, London, surgeon, all real estate in Georgia, South Carolina, "or any other part of America," all to be sold and profits to William to be divided as he sees fit among himself; my son, Richard; my dau Jane Barnard, widow; Martha Young, wife of Isaac Young, all of the province of "Georgia in South Carolina." Spanish bonds, obligations, other demands upon the crown of Spain amounting together to the sum of 240,000 pounds Sterling and upwards, to be paid son, William. William to divide this amount as he sees fit among the following: my wife, Elizabeth; my son, Richard; my dau, Jane Barnard, widow; my dau., Martha Young; my dau-in-law, Elizabeth Lister Bradley. Remainder of the estate to William. Exor: son, William. Wit: Mary Susan, Thos. Metcalf, W. Creser. (Will "extracted by William Fuller, Proctor in Doctor's Commons.") Edward Barnard, St. Paul's Parish. Wife: Rebecca, "(in lieu of her Thirds, or Dower)," the house and land on which Doctor Johnson now lives in Augusta, two feather beds, mattresses, bed steads, furniture now standing in the little bedroom below stairs, pillows, six mahogany chairs, the household furniture she brought to me when I married her, a baby horse named Middle-ton, the chaise, a little grey pacing horse, I lend her for the rest of her natural life, a Negro wench named Sarah and her two children, Peter and Sarah. After wife's decease these Negroes to my younger son, John. Son-in-law: William Goodgion, 50 pounds Sterling, to buy mourning. Eldest son: James Frashier Barnard, house and land in Augusta, containing 450 acres, Ne­groes named Absolam, Coggie, and Nancy. Sons: James and John, remainder of estate, equally divided. Exors: Wife, William Goodgion. Wit: John Watson, I. Waters, William Little.

(p.356) ISAAC YOUNG and MARTHA his wife, of Longcut? Farm, Christ Church Parish, planter, to GEORGE GALPHIN of Silver Bluff, S.C., planter, and JOHN MOREL of Savannah, merchant, as Trustees. Trust deed dated Aug. 16, 1760, conveying 600 acres on southeast side of Wilmington Island in said parish, also 500 acres on same Island bounded s. e. by Richard Kent, south by Warsaw River and west by creek leading to Tybee River; also lot 116 in town of Hardwick, size 76½  x 113½ feet, all being lately the property of John Barnard of Wilmington Island, deceased. It is recited that said property was sold by Matthew Roche, Provost Marshal, at public sale, to said Isaac Young as the property of said deceased under certain judgments for debt, having been so sold Aug. 14, 1760, at which time said lands were sold together with a number of slaves, 35 cattle, 18 horses, hogs, plantation tools and implements, sailing-boat, household goods, &c., all of which personal property is conveyed to said trustees along with said lands. The judgment for debt was in favor of William Bradley of Westminster, England, issued against JANE BARNARD, widow and Admx. with the will annexed, on estate of said JOHN BARNARD, dec'd who died insolvent. It is stated that said JOHN BARNARD was survived by his widow the said JANE, and their sis children TIMOTHY, WILLIAM, JOHN, ROBERT, ELIZABETH and JANE BARNARD, all said children being minors; "and whereas, the said Jane, widow as aforesaid, is the only sister of said Martha Young, and the said Isaac and Martha are desirous of making some provision for the support of said widow and her six children, they do now make this deed to said Trustees in trust for the use and benefit of said Jane and her children. The Barnard homeplace was on the said 500-acre tract. Said land and personal property is conveyed on condition that it being held for the use long as she lives, and after her death (the said Timothy, the oldest son, having already been provided for) the said homeplace tract of 500 acres to go to said WILLIAM BARNARD the second son, and his heirs and assigns; the 100 acre tract and town lot to go to JOHN BARNARD the third son, he already having had 300 acres; and 600-acre tract to go to ROBERT BARNARD the fourth son; with provisions made for said two daughters. The slaves and other personal property to be equally divided, after their mother's death, between all the said children or the survivors of them. It is furthermore conditioned that out of the income of said property or estate the Trustees shall pay an annuity of 300£ at the rate of 20£ annually on Jan. 1st., to said Isaac Young as Trustee for his two daughters ELIZABETH MARY YOUNG and WILLIAM YOUNG, minors, and to them after they are of age. Witnesses: Thomas Hooper and Thomas Burrington. Probated by latter before David Montaigut, J.P.

Deed dated March 27, 1767, conveying the lands amounting to about 350 acres deeded by Lachlan McGillivray to said Barnard for the use and benefit of his said son, by deed of gift dated March 12, 1764, said lands being lot 10 in Hucks tything, Percival Ward, Savannah, also farm lot #10 in 2nd tything, Anson Ward, containing 45 acres; also trust farm lots 3 and 4, containing 45 acres each, in 3rd tything, Anson Ward, also trust farm lot 6 containing 90 acres in said 3rd tything, Anson Ward, and other tracts. Deed dated --- 1774. Consideration money 400£, "it being the proper money of Mrs. Rebecca Barnard, wife of said Edward Barnard and late widow of --- (blank in deed) Church, Esq., practitioner in physic". Conveys 69 acres being part of 396 acre tract in Georgia opposite Fort Moore in S.C., granted James Brown, which has since become property of said Zachariah Lamar. Said 396-acre tract being on Savannah River on an island about ¼ mile above Fort Moore. Property deeded to Goodgion in trust for said Rebecca, her husband signing to show consent. Witnesses: Francis Bogbee, Thos. Waters J.P.

Deed dated March 16, 1775, conveying 500 acres in the Parish of St. Paul bounded n.e. by lands surveyed for Robert Morrow, and n.w. by Robert Middleton and Samuel Sansom, and s.w. by the old Indian boundary line, and east by Thomas Young; same was granted grantor Feb. 7th, last past. Witnesses: John Graham and German Wright. No probate of deed.

(p.246) Certificate by Alexander Wylly, Clerk to the Governor and Executive Council, dated June 6, 1775, certifying that the claims of George Galphin upon the Creek and Cherokee Indians and the lands lately ceded by them, and the claims of John Miller, Timothy Barnard, Benjamin Stedham, Robert Toole, Edward Haynes, James McQueen Jr., John Meallis?, Thomas Moseley, Joseph O. Pepper, Richard Brown, Francis Lewis, John Rook, James Dgurourias?, John Pigg, John Anderson, James Surges, William Newton, all of whom were lately Indian traders and who assigned their claims to said George Galphin, have been examined by the Governor and Council, and approved, and that they find there is justly due to be paid to said Galphin 9791£ same to be paid to him out of the sale of said ceded lands.

Deed dated Apr. 26, 1777, conveys 300 acres in said parish bounded south by marshes of Little Ogeechee River, east by Frederick Shaffer and Frederick Fam, west by Edmond Tannett and Francis Davis (or Parish?) Said deceased left a will dated July 8, 1768, executed in County Middlesex, England, devising all his lands in Ga. and S.C., to his son the said grantor, with provisions for the support of testator's son Richard Bradley and testator's daughters Jane Barnard, widow, and Martha Young wife of Isaac Young of Ga. Deed dated Nov. 12, 1784, conveying undivided moiety or half part of 2600 acres on the head of Little Satilla River in Glynn County, also half part of 500 acres on same river and in same county; the said 2600 acres being formerly property of RICHARD STEVENS of S.C., and sold to grantor under the Act of Confiscation as property of Capt. Ord? of the British Navy or other British subject, and said 560 acres formerly property of EDWARD BARNARD and sold under same Act as confiscated property of JOHN GRAHAM, a person named as an enemy in said Act.
