DNA matching of Andrew Mannon (1840-1920) descendants has revealed large DNA
match clusters to the Mullins/Caudill/Tackett families. There are also
lesser clusters to the Poe, Wadkins and Napier families and many others that are
not Mannon but those are not relevant here.
Most of the DNA
matches appear to from descendants of William Mullins and Rutha Foster
(?). Rutha's supposed surname has yet to be verified and only exists in
Ancestry trees. This writer has yet to find the source for that surname.
This old
website gives their children as: Booker Mullins 1795, Nancy Mullins 1797 TN, William
Varner Mullins 1803, Marra "Matty" Mullins 1804, Mary Mullins 1810, Susannah "Susan" Mullins
1812, Andrew "Andy" Mullins 1812, Anna Mullins 1816 KY, Isaac Mullins 1816,
Polly Lavina Mullins 1819, Elizabeth Mullins
1823, Owen Mullins 1823. There is also an unusual gap between Marra
1804 and Mary 1810.
This list is probably based
on ages and proximity more than anything else.
The
website does not go into detail as to why these were selected.
In this examination we
will use DNA matches to figure out a possible family group. The current
theory is that Rutha Foster Mullins was a sister of Mary Foster who married
Andrew Mannon about 1808. This would explain why Mannon descendants have
extensive DNA matches to this family. The grandchildren lines below
that we have DNA matches to are
colored
in blue.

47.
William Mullins Sr. b. ca 1776 Virginia - d. late 1856 or early 1857 Floyd
County, Kentucky, md Rutha "Ruth" (Foster?) b. ca 1780 Virginia/North Carolina
(census records say Virginia but death record says North Carolina) - d. May 1860
Floyd County, Kentucky. The Ben Osborne manuscript states he was known as
William "Coonie Bill" Mullins. William was in the 1810 and 1820 Floyd County,
Kentucky censuses. He lived in the section of Floyd County that was broke off to
form Pike County in 1822. William is in the 1830 Pike County, Kentucky Census.
He moved to Beaver Creek in Floyd County 1833-1834. At that time, Beaver Creek
was "a wilderness full of wild beasts and all kind of game." It was necessary
"to build wild pounds to put" the "cows in over night to keep the bears,
panthers, and wolves from killing them." The early settlers would kill "meat
from the woods" and clear "a small bottom to raise corn enough for bread, and
ground" the "corn into meal between two flat rocks cut from the native
cliffs..." The "sifter was a dressed deer skin with holes made in it with a hot
awl." It was hard to raise corn. They "would build fires all around" their
"field to keep the bears and deer from eating it up during the night." There
were "deer and turkeys in long droves all over the woods." They sometimes had
"to go fifty miles for salt, coffee, and other goods." There "were plenty of
snakes and fish...but there was lard to fry" the fish "in only when" the settler
"would kill a fat bear or a wild hog." [The Autobiography of James Clayburn "Claibe"
Jones] On 8 July 1839, William purchased a tract of land on Bull (Mire) Creek.
On 25 Oct. 1853, he sold the tract, along with the tract of his son Andrew
Mullins, on Bull Mire Creek on the south side of Licking River to James
Whitaker. William and Ruthie died on Beaver Creek but were taken to Indian
Creek, Pike County, Kentucky, and buried on the farm where their daughter Nancy
and her husband Hiram Osborne lived. However, their tombstones were removed many
years later and the cemetery was plowed and used as a garden. There is no trace
of the graves left. William and Ruth are believed to have had the following
children:
