Julius Millican was
probably born in the early to mid 1770s in North Carolina. This date
is ascertained from the 1830 census that says he was 50-59 years old meaning he
was born 1771-1780 and that he was more likely born in the earlier part of
that range because of possible older sons. There is no evidence known by
this writer that he was born closer to 1777 or 1778 as some family trees say. Julius Millican's birthplace of North
Carolina is taken from his son John's reply on the 1880 Illinois census. Julius Millican died after 1830 probably in Anderson county, Tennessee. 2019 update: Some limited online research into the Hart and Starnes families points to the possibility that BOTH those lines may in fact be descendants of the Goldman family. Catherine Hart and Mary "Polly" Starnes may have been cousins. DNA matches to this writer suggests a genetic connection to the Starnes family. Other Millican descendants need to do similar research. The results are posted at bottom of this page. The conclusions below are mostly based on circumstantial evidence and Ancestry tree "information" has been avoided. There is no actual record of the children of Julius Millican. These family groups are speculative at the moment. |

Mother? |
Unknown wife. Julius Millican may have been married before the documented marriage to Catherine (Caterena) Hart in 1798. They would have been married about the mid 1790s. She either died young or they divorced. Julius Millican was either married multiples times or there were TWO Julius Millicans about the same age living in the same area but this is speculation by some. This writer has yet to see any evidence of two adult similar-aged Julius Millicans in the same area. The following children may be by a still unknown first wife or are nephews: |
Census Records: |
1791-1800 | James Millican was born 1791-1800 probably in Kentucky or North Carolina. He died after 1831. Nothing more is known. | |
1793 | Hugh Millican was born about 1793 in Kentucky or North Carolina. He died after 1860 probably in Texas. | 1833 KY, Whitley Co., tax roll |
Mother |
Catherine (Katherine) Hart
was born about 1781 in Kentucky. Her parents were
David Hart Sr & Margaret (unknown). She
had a sister Elizabeth Hart that married Nathaniel Elkins and an
older brother David Hart (1768-1812+) that married Margaret "Peggy"
Black (Blackwelder?). Julius Millican and Catherine Hart were married on or about 14 June 1798 (license 31 May) in Green county, Kentucky. In 1850 "Katherine Milligan" was living with her likely grandson Samuel H Milligan in Blount county, Tennessee. |

Son | John A Millican was born
about 1799 in Green county, Kentucky. He married Rhoda Norman.
John lived in Tennessee, Missouri and Illinois. John died after 1885
probably in Saline county, Illinois. In the 1880s John applied
for a War of 1812 pension and in the application he states his father was
Julius Millican and that he was born in Green county, Kentucky. This
is the only proven child of Julius Millican. | 1840 TN, Anderson Co., p. (8) 1850 MO, St Francois Co., p. (202) 1860 MO, St Francois Co., p. 79 1870 Illinois, Hardin Co., p. 12 (29) 1880 Illinois, Hardin Co., p. 34 (396) |
Son | Julius Millican Jr was born
1800/1801 in Green county, Kentucky. He was often in trouble with the
law. He married Malinda Scarborough.
Julius died after 1840 probably in Blount county, Tennessee. Children
below are assumed.

Son | Moses Millican was born
either about 1794, 1795 or 1803 (census records vary) in Anderson County,
Tennessee according
to census records. He died after 1870 probably in Texas. The birthplace of
Tennessee maybe evidence he was born closer to 1803 given that is about when
Julius Millican moved to Tennessee.

Son | Harve Millican was born
about 1804 in Anderson County, Tennessee. Harve's birthplace of Tennessee is stated in
four consecutive census records. Most family trees on Ancestry list
him as being born in Virginia with no evidence. Harve married Permelia "Millie" Hicks (d/o Nancy Starnes Hix). According to a Bible record Harve and Permelia were first cousins. Harve died after 1880 probably in White county, Tennessee.

Son | William Millican was born
11 Oct 1810 in Anderson County, Tennessee. He married Rebecca
???? in "August 1834"
probably in Anderson county, Tennessee. Rebecca died in 1862 in Collin
county, Texas and William remarried to Mary Amanda Boren Bybee. William died
22 March 1871 possibly in Collin county, Texas but some stories say he died
in Dallas.

him in 1850 and then 3 households away on 1860.

Probably many more children currently unknown. Many
other children are listed in Ancestry trees but given their birth years it's
more likely they are grandchildren not children. |
Mary "Polly" Starnes (1777-1861) maybe a
second or third wife of
Julius Millican. This marriage is supposedly from a Bible or later
written family
record but this has yet to be seen by this writer. The record
supposedly states that Mary was a sister of a
General Starnes. Researchers believe Mary was a sister of Nancy
Starnes Hix (mother of Permelia Hix that married Harve Millican). Mary was born in September 1777 in Virginia. Mary was living with Robert Millican in 1850. Mary died about 1861 in Anderson county, Tennessee. [Find-a-Grave] Who has this record or a copy of? |
