marriage is verified through a court case. Sparling died
on or about 15 July 1839 in Greene County, Tennessee. Sparling
served in the Revolutionary War and drew a pension after the war.
Nelly died "15 Aug 1839" in Greene County, Tennessee.

Tennessee, Greene County, Probate Court [link] January Sessions 1804 Joseph Hixson dec'd Will Monday 23rd January 1804 The last Will and Testament of Joseph Hixson was produced to Court for probate whereupon Thomas Prather and Alexander Prethero two of the subscribing witnesses thereto made oath that they saw the said Joseph Hixson Sign, Seal, publish and declare the same to be his last Will and Testament and that he was at the time of publishing the same, of sound and perfect mind and memory to the best of their knowledge & C. Which will is admitted to Record and is in the following words, to wit: "In the name of God Amen, this twenty sixth day of November One Thousand and eight and three I Joseph Hixson of the State of Tennessee and County of Greene being very weak in body but of sound and perfect mind and memory blessed by God and calling to mind the mortality of my body and that it is appointed for all men and to dy [die], do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in maner and from following (Viz) principally and first of all. I re***** Sol to God who gave it and my body to the Earth to be buried a Christian like and a decent manner at the discretion of my Executors nothing *ughting but at the general reserection I shall receive the same again, by the Almighty Power of God, and as is touching such worldly estate wherewith hath pleased God to bless with, in this life I give devise and disposes of the same in the following maner, that is to say, first it is my Will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid and satisfied. I give to my beloved wife Susannah all my lands, Negros and Stocks of all kind[?] of house furniture with, ful position, of all improvements to the plantation that I now live on with full possetion [possession] of all property real and personal during her widow hood and if she marries then all the property that I will, to my wife is to be equally divided amongst all my children which is Andrew, William, Timothy, Joseph, Ephraim, John, Susannah Davis, Bengamin and James and my wife and not to be sold except seventy acres of land I gave to my sons Joseph and Ephraim, a part of the said land that I now live on agreeable to the lines that was run for my son Andrew, for which my son Andrew received fifty pound of my sons Joseph and Ephraim, and there shall be fifty pounds reducted out of my son Andrew’s part or share of my estate and fifty acres of land I gave to my son Ephraim, a new Survey that he now lives on and at my wife’s death all the above mentioned estate that I will to her shall be equally divided except two above mentioned tract of land and two Negros, my Negro boy Abraham, I gave to my son Bengamin, and Negro girl named Mana I give to my son James. And I do make & ordain my trusty friends, Susannah my wife, my sons Joseph and Ephraim my sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament. Bowman [Page 1] State of Tennessee A Record of all the proceedings had in a Cause in Equity lately determined in the Circuit Court of Law and Equity for Greene County within the first Judicial Circuit and State aforesaid Between George Alexander Administrator De Bonis Non of Susannah Hixson Dec'd and Timothy Hixson Complainants against Sparling Bowman and James Allen Respondants. [clip] ********** The Answer of Sparling Bowman to the Bill of Compliant ******* by James H Davis Administrator of Susannah Hixson Dec'd & Timothy Hixson in the Honable Court. [Page 5] This defendant saving to himself all manner of Advantage & Benefit of exceptions to the many imperfections and untruths in said Bill contained for answer there to or so much thereof as this Defendant is advised is material or necessary to be answered unto, says, that his Wife is the oldest Daughter of the said Susanna Hickson Dec'd & always until the death of the said Susannah lived close neighbors, for upwards of forty years - that for nineteen or twenty last before the Death of said Susannah Dec'd she was a Widow, and a very aged woman that she was possessed of a large property, consisting of a fair number of Negros & stock which was left to her by her [Page 6] husband's Will during her life & during her Widowhood she acquired a considerable property by her Care and Industry, that after she became old, her children became restless about her having so much property & finally a Bill in Equity was filed against her relative to her estate by her Two sons Joseph & Ephraim Hickson they being Co Executors of ** Estate, as your defendant believe with designs to entangle their mother and this Deft's Mother in Law & finally to obtain a Division of said Estate before her death. Copies of which Bill your Def't will produce mark B[?] - that the old Lady being nearly Eighty years of Age & unable to go to Law - did compromise the matter with her sons & divided her estate with her children, amongst which the said Complainant got his full share - that after the Division of said estate Susannah on the 27th April 1822 made a Bill of Sale of her property to the wife of this Defendant, the original of which is herewith filed & will produce to your Honor a Copy on final hearing which this Defendant prays may be taken as part of his Reason by which it will appear the notes on James Allen are included in said assignment, and on the Day of the Assignment the said Susannah placed said notes in the possession of this Defendant's Wife as well as the other property mentioned in said Bill of Sale ********************* [page 26] Elizabeth Laney aged about 72 years Deposith and Says she heard Susanah Hixson in her lifetime say that she gave all the property *** her **** and left her to Ellender Bowman for what she had done and for to take care of her and to maintain her - her lifetime & that the boys should let her & **** for she had not a **** and she said that if it had not been for Sparling and Ellen she did not know haugh or what she should have done Question by Defendants: What would you **** the nursing and taking care of the old Miss Hixon would be worth or what would you think you could have taken care of the old Lade for. Question - Do: Was the two before names Negroes dead before the death of Miss Hixson. Answer: Yes some time before her death and this Deposeth further states that she Miss Hixson told her that she had give to Ellen Bowman all the property that was... [From Ancestry user JohnEJeffers] This Instrument presented in the County Court of Greene Co on the 6th May 1839 for probate by Nelly Bowman and contested by Sparling Bowman & others. George W. Foutr C.G.C. Whereas my wife, Eleanor, received from her mother, Susannah Hixson widow of Joseph Hixson late of County of Greene and State of Tennessee decd, two negro girls, one named Rachel and the other Ailsey, aged about 14 and 12 years, two beds, bedding and bedsteads, one corner cupboard and furniture, one eight day clock, two walnut tables, one candlestand, one chest and one trunk, one big wheel and one reel, one loom and tackling, four split bottom chairs, all of which property, with two meat tubs, are now in my possession and were given to my said wife by her mother as and for her own individual right and property. And should my wife outlive me, it is my wish and desire that she should hold the same property absolutely free and clear from the claims of my children and all other persons, and shall not be taken into any account of my estate after my decease. Therefore, I Sparling Bowman Sr., of the County Greene and State aforesaid, do hereby will and devise to my said wife, Eleanor Bowman, the whole of the negroes and other property above summated to be by her freely and fully and exclusively enjoyed after my death and to be disposed by her as she may think proper. Hereby revoking all former wills by me made so far as respects the above property. And my said wife shall be fully authorized to retain and hold possession of the same immediately after my decease with the same being in any manner subject to the control, disposition or management of my Executors or Administrators.
