Will of William South

In the name of God, Amen. I William SOUTH of the State of South Carolina Laurens District, being of sound mind, and disposing memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of life, and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with, do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following, that is to say.

Item 1st, I wish my funeral expenses and just debts to be paid out of my estate.

Item 2nd, I give to my beloved wife Katy SOUTH for and during her natural life, one hundred acres of land including the dwelling house where we now live and all the rest of the nesary buildings the lines then to be laid out according with her desire. I also leave to her during her life the property following that is to say. My negroe man named Willis, also my negro woman named Servina, and as many horned(?) cattle, and hogs, as she wishes for her use. One horse, saddle, and bridle, all my house hold and kitchen furniture if she may wish so much as much corn, wheat, and ment and other provisions as she may need. At the death of my wife, I wish all the said property which I have left to her to be sold by me exetrs. hereinafter named at public notary on such credit as they may think proper. And the proceeds of said sale to be equally divided amongst all my children here in after named, excepting my daughter Nancy HALL, she being other wise separately provide for.

Item 3rd, I wish my exors. to raise from my estate the sum of five hundred dollars. And I wish my son Gabriel SOUTH to put the said five hundred dollars out on interest during the life of my daughter Nancy HALL and to pay over to her annually the amount of interest arising from said five hundred dollars. (At the death of said Nancy, I wish two hundred and fifty dollars of the said five hundred dollars) to be put to interest until William HALL Junr. the son of my daughter Nancy HALL attains the age of twenty one years. Then the said two hundred and fifty dollars with the interest which may have arisen from it to be delivered to said William HALL Junr. in his own right. The remaining two hundred and fifty dollars, of the above five hundred dollars, I wish put to interest and the annual proceeds paid into the hand of Patsy ROBERT, the daughter of said Nancy HALL for her own personal use. And if the present husband of the said Patsy ROBERTSON should die before the said Patsy, in that case I wish the said two hundred and fifty dollars to be put in the hand of the said Patsy in her own right. And I wish my daughter Nancy HALL or her heirs to have none other interest in my estate, either real or personal.

Item 4th, The residue of my estate real and personal, I wish to be sold by me exors. and the proceeds arising there from I wish to be equally divided amongst my children Viz: Daniel SOUTH, Rachel CLARDY, William SOUTH, John SOUTH, Gabriel SOUTH, Hannah NORROD, Sarah HALL, James SOUTH, and whereas my son Zedekiah SOUTH have departed this life, and have left a widow and children, I wish that equal part, that would have gone to my son Zedekiah if alive, to go to his widow Ruth SOUTH, and her children, and to be equally divided amongst them all.

And lastly, I do constitute and appoint my son Gabriel and my son in law JESSE E. CLARDY exors. of this my last will and testament by me heretofore made. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this the second day of September, in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty two. 

Signed, sealed, published, and declared, as and for the last will and testament of the above named William SOUTH in the presence of us.
