William South was born about 1760 [est.]. A
South family researcher believed William South was
the son of Zedekiah South and Nancy Violet but offered no evidence other than
the fact William had a son named Zedekiah (or Zechariah). This has yet to be properly
researched. William South married Catherine Daniel on 13 Oct 1785 in Bedford County, Virginia. Before 1790 they moved from Virginia to Laurens County, South Carolina. William was most likely a farmer which was the most common occupation. William died in 1844 in Laurens County, South Carolina. His will was proven 5 Aug 1844. William is buried in Poplar Springs cemetery, Ware Shoals, Laurens County, South Carolina. The gravestone which appears to be installed much later gives a birth year of 1760 but that is probably just a speculative date. Mother |
Catherine "Katy" Daniel was
born in 1765 in Caroline or Essex County, Virginia. She was the daughter of
John Daniel & Sarah Wright. The parents have
not been independently verified by this writer but seem to be supported by
DNA. Catherine died in or about 1857 in Laurens County, South Carolina and was buried in Poplar Springs cemetery, Ware Shoals, Laurens County, South Carolina. [Find-A-Grave] [WikiTree] |

● Nancy South was born about 1788-90 (est.) in
Viginia or South Carolina. She married William
Hall (jr). William Hall may have
been 10-20 years older. Nancy died after 1844 in SC or GA. Recent research
finds a William Hall (born 1774) living in Cass [Bartow] County, Georgia in
1850 with Reuben and Frances Hall Carter of a similar age. The
association of these three indicates William and Frances are probably two
children of the William Hall (sr) that died in 1799 in Laurens County, South
Carolina. It's possible William Hall (jr) was married before Nancy
South and had children but no evidence has been found yet. It's also
possible William Hall and Nancy South had more children that the two listed
given the large age gap. The two listed are only known from the will
of their grandfather William South. The death record of William James
Hall lists her only as "Miss South".

● Zedekiah South was born about 1791-1800
(est.) He married Ruth ?? (born 1791-1800). There is also a possibility that he is actually the Zechariah South (not Zedekiah South) that was born about 1814 (per census). If so this would make him the last child and push his mother's birth year closer to 1770 when she was about 45 and the typical age for a very late birth which was not uncommon. |

● Rachel South was born after 1792
in South Carolina. She married
Jesse Ellis Clardy (born 1790-91). Rachel evidently died about 1842.
Jesse E Clardy died in 1843 and his will (written 1832) was recorded on
17 Sep 1843.

● Sarah South was born Mar 11, 1807 in Laurens

Carolina. She married Reuben Hall (born 1810). They moved to Cass [Bartow]

apart in 1880. Sarah died 31 Jan 1892 in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia and was
buried in Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Rome, Georgia.

● Zechariah South was born about 1814 in Laurens
County, South Carolina. He died after 1882 possibly in Cass (Bartow)
County, Georgia. The William South estate file mentions Zechariah South but doesn't say how he is connected. The estate papers indicate it was believed he had died but in fact was still alive as late as 1882. |
Christine Gee who wrote a
William South genealogy did not realize the persons listed in the estate
papers as Patsy Robertson and Martha Robertson were actually the same
person. Gee in her
genealogy listed Patsy Robertson and Martha Robertson as mother and daughter
and David Robertson as Martha's brother. This writer realized (after
never locating this group in census records years before) that since "Patsy"
is actually the common diminutive name of Martha it might be possible that
Martha and Patsy were in fact the same person and that her husband was
David Roberson. After this correction it was then finally possible to locate Martha "Patsy" Roberson and
David Roberson in the 1850 Federal Census in Cass (Bartow county), Georgia.
This county actually joins Floyd county where this writer's ancestor (and
suspected brother to Martha) William James Hall (1834-1919) lived much of
his life but It was not clear where he lived before his marriage to Julia
Lumpkin in 1866.
Martha "Patsy" Hall (daughter of Nancy South) was born about 1817 in Laurens County, South Carolina and married David Roberson in the 1830s. They migrated to Bartow (formerly Cass) County, Georgia about 1845-46 and can be found on the 1850 Census for Bartow (formerly Cass) county. Also in Bartow county in 1850 was a William J Hall (born 1834 SC) living with the Jonathan McDow family. For years it was suspected this was in fact William James Hall (1834-1919) but proof could not be found and the 1860 census is missing for part of this county. Fortunately new research in Oct 2019 by this writer in digitized Georgia newspapers found an 1860 newspaper notice concerning lost papers that directly connects Jonathan McDow with David Roberson verifying that the William J Hall living with McDow was in fact our William James Hall (1834-1919). 1860-07-25 "The Cassville Standard" David & Martha "Patsy" Roberson were responsible for the $250 payment from William South's estate to William James Hall after he reached 21 years old (per William South's will). In 1855 after William James Hall became 21 years old David & Martha Roberson made the interest payment to William J Hall from the estate of William South [doc 1] In 1859 David & Martha filed a petition to have a trust fund [assumed from William South estate] transferred to them assumed to be Martha's portion of the William South estate. The bond for the transfer was given by John H Walker who was the wife of Catherine "Kate" Clardy (daughter of Jesse Ellis Clardy & Rachel South). The bond was recorded in the Laurens County, South Carolina "Petitions and reports" [doc 2] Christine Gee may not have been aware of the migration of many other South and Hall descendants to Cass (Bartow) County, Georgia and neighboring Floyd county although she did note that descendants of these Halls lived near Rome, Floyd County, Georgia. Here is how this writer descends from William South: William South (1761-1844 Laurens County, SC) md. Catherine Daniel ... Nancy South (died 1840s?) md. William Hall ......
