Burris family of South Carolina, Kentucky and Missouri notes:

(Last updated January 12, 2020)

Kentucky tax rolls:

By Kentucky law every male 21 years old and over had to pay a tax if they had property (real estate, personal).  The taxes were collected over several months with the exact collection date recorded.  It appears the payments were recorded in loose alphabetical order by first letter of the surname (A-Z) either at the time of recording or recompiled that way later for the state.  The recording of taxes paid in Clark county, Kentucky required at least 4 ledger books (each a different part of the county) by the time Estill county was created in 1808 from southern Clark county.

Two or more people with the exact same collection date in a loosely alphabetic tax roll (with collection dates spanning months) is evidence those two people lived very near or with each other and paid their taxes on the same day or at the same time. This interpretation allows us to use the tax collection dates like a census and be able to work out relatives and neighbors by collection date proximity. Using this interpretation the overlapping of tax roll data gives us evidence of a related group consisting of William Burris, Walter Burris, Thomas Burris, Isaiah Burris and David Burris.  Walter Burris can be positively connected to David Burris and Isaiah Burris through other records so this verifies this methodology as well.

Many people that would have been neighbors and acquaintances also later moved to Missouri along with the Burris family reflecting the known historical record of group migrations from parts of Madison and Clark county, Kentucky into the "Boon's Lick" region of Missouri.   Other surnames that can be associated by close dates are Lackey, Hamilton, Barnes, Box, Barker, Thorp, Noland, McMahan, Savage most of which all connect in some way to the Burris family in Kentucky and later Missouri.

Clark/Madison/Estill county, Kentucky tax roll analysis:

Shaded entries indicate where taxes were collected on the same day which is a strong indicator of close proximity or cohabitation.  When the tax rolls are arranged by collection date they can serve as a census.

*The 1796 tax roll lists William Burrows' household as having "2 males over 21 years" [age 21 and up] and "2 males above 16 years" [age 16-20]. The two aged 21 and over would be William Burris and Walter Burris. The two aged 16-20 would be Isaiah Burris and Thomas Burris. David Burris was evidently living elsewhere either and didn't join his family until much later.

Notes: Isaiah & William Burrus always listed consecutively.  Walter Burrus was taxed only on personal property.

Thomas Burrus Sr had lots on 4 Mile Creek, 2 Mile Creek, and Stoner Creek.  Thomas Burrus Sr was from Orange county, Virginia and was the son of Thomas Burrus and Frances Tandy.  It is not known if this Burrus line is in anyway connected to the Burris line from Laurens county, South Carolina.  Proximity would normally suggest a connection but other than both being in Clark county, Kentucky there are no records connecting them together and there are no known overlaps in acquaintances or location of descendants.

There is no known connections to Townson Burris and Charles Burris who appear to be yet another Burris line.

1795 - A list of delinquents returned by the Sherriffs of the Several Countys which have Removed to Clark County for the year:
Henry Burris

1806, 1807, 1808 Clark county, no James Lackey listed.

The 1813 tax book was dated 29 Oct 1813 so James Ferrel died prior to this date.  Johnson's Regiment Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Infantry was first mustered in on 20 May 1813, and was reorganized and enlarged on 14 Aug 1813, in preparation for the Thames campaign.
