Letter from Benny Britton, June, 2002:

Lance,

I just returned from Ms. I was able to find land records, will and probate for James in Panola Co. Also found Mary's marker in Everson Cemetery outside Coldwater in Tate Co. James is on Holly Springs Church roll for 1837-39 which indicated he was from Fayette Co, Tn. Also shows land owned in De Soto (Tate) Co in 1860.

I will return again to go thru land records in Hernando (Desoto Co. (Tate)) as well as in Holly Springs (Marshall Co).

Have pieced together following timeframes:

In Fayette Co. Tn at Prosperity Church prior to 1837.
In Holly Springs (Marshall Co. 1837-39).

Bought section (600) acres about one-two miles south of Sardis, on east side of current IS55 on April 4, 1848 and sold 3-8-55. Located at NW corner of intersection of present Belmont Rd and River Rd.
Went to Coldwater area where Mary died 1859.
Owned 200-400 acres in De Soto in 1860 Agriculture census.
Returned to Sardis and bought additional land 11-9-1865 plus several other transactions until death.
Will leaves estate to wife Caroline A Britton.
Have will dated Jan. 8, 1879. Also have probate document dated March 10, 1879 indicating his death.

I just got a response to an inquiry on Prosperity Church in Fayette Co. Tn

The first Presbyterian Church in the vicinity of Hickory Withe was organized at Prosperity in 1834. This was not far from Oakland. A log building was erected at this place. In 1850 the membership was divided, and one portion went to the organization at Hickory Withe and the other to Moscow. Note Moscow is in middle of the southern part of the county.

Benny
