Mrs. Dave Johnson Fatally Burned Friday Afternoon
Mrs. Dave Johnson, residing on the Tackett & Allen place about one and one-half miles South of Emory, was fatally burned about 3:30 o'clock Friday afternoon when the apron she was wearing was sucked into the heater by the draft, igniting her clothing. She was alone at the house, Mr. Johnson being out on the place at work, and ran out into the yard, where, aided by the high wind, the fire burned all of her clothing from her body before the nearest neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Moody, could reach her. Her body was burned to a blister from her head to her feet. She was
conscious up until her death, which occurred about 3:30 Saturday morning.
Mrs. Johnson was well known, having lived in the Smyrna community and Emory and vicinity for a number of years, coming here from Collin county. She was nearly 65 years of age, a Christian woman, having been a member of the Primitive Baptist church nearly forty years.
She is survived by her husband and five children, namely, Mrs. Maude Bandy of Collin county; Mr. Ernest Johnson of Collin county; Mrs. Alice Gray of Collin county; John Johnson of Floydada, and Mrs. Goldie Sanford of Emory, all of whom were with their mother, except Mr. John Johnson of Floydada.
Her remains were laid to rest in the Turner cemetery, four miles South of Emory, Sunday, Rev. C. M. Martin of this city conducting the funeral services.
The Leader joins with friends in offering sympathy and condolence to the sadly bereaved family.
[The
family story is also that she had a cast on arm from a recent fall and could not
remove her dress.]
