Richard Lumpkin was born
before 1770. Richard died between 1817 and 1820 in Madison county, Georgia. Richard Lumpkin and Betsy Smith were married on or after 17 July 1790 in Guilford county, North Carolina. This is the date of Richard and Betsy's marriage bond. This family group is based on circumstantial evidence mainly the ages, birthplaces and shared residences. Most of the children and some grandchildren appear to repeat family names possibly brothers of Richard. |

Many Ancestry "trees" repeat George Lumpkin's parents as William Lumpkin and
Mary Winstead but offer no direct evidence or explanation of the supposed link. Just
because things are repeated in a multitude of Ancestry trees does not make it
more valid. It's my experience anything not verified with real documents or
circumstantial evidence should be dismissed until proven.
Given that on the 1820 Census a "Betsy Lumpkin" was living close to George Lumpkin's future
father-in-law John Cleghorn it's more likely this Betsey Lumpkin is a close relative of
George Lumpkin. A Richard Lumpkins married a Betsey Smith in 1790 in
Guilford county, North Carolina. [marriage
record]
Many Ancestry trees also have George's death date
wrong.
The source of Mary Witcher's last name in unknown to
me but I am repeating it because early researchers have that name but I have yet
to see what the source is. The marriage record says Smith.
