[M234, roll 290, frame 513]
New Orleans Lou.
28th June 1838
Sir,
I arrived here from Little Rock on 23rd inst and found
Capt. Morrison had left five or six days previous with a small party for Fort
Gibson; the muster roll for the party delivered by me was forwarded from Little
Rock. I am informed by Capt. Abercrombie who accompanied Capt. Morrison to
this place, that there were now more than thirty or forty Indians now at Tampa
Bay. I shall therefore remain until Capt. Morrison returns unless other
orders are received from your Department.
The thirty three Negroes who were arrested, seized from me and lodged in the jail of this city, were last evening surrendered to me. The Creek attorney (N. F. Collins Esqr.) nor any authorised agent being present and not wishing to detain them at an expense to the Government they were immediately embarked and dispatched west with 25 days provisions under the charge of assistant conductor Benjamin, who to satisfy the Indians, had been left with the Negroes at the period of seizure, of which fact, I informed the Department at the time.
Funds, (25 or 30 thousand dollars) are necessary to cover the contracts of Maj. Clark and myself; the individuals concerned, are much in want of money. I have received nearly sufficient to cover the transportation and subsistence of the party conducted by me. May I ask an answer by express mail?
I am Sir
Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servant
