Father

James Britton was born about 1800 in Chesterfield county, Virginia. 

James married Mary W Kirkham on 10 Feb 1826 Northampton county, North Carolina. In the early 1830s this family moved to Tennessee (county unknown) and by the mid 1830s this family had settled in northern Mississippi. James Britton owned a "plantation" and many slaves.  According to a relative James remarried to a woman with a son and after James' death the widow received his estate.

James died in early 1879 probably in Panola county.  [notes]  		Census Records:

Mother

 Mary W. Kirkham was born 13 Nov 1808 in or near Petersburg, Virginia.  She was the daughter of Jacob Kirkham and Rachel Stine.  Her marriage to James Briton in North Carolina may be because she had Kirkham relatives in North Carolina.

Mary died 8 March 1859 in Tate county and was buried in Eavenson cemetery, Tate county, Mississippi.  Her middle name is not yet known.		1830 VA, Chesterfield county, p. 442

Son ● Dr. James Monroe Britton was born in Dec 1826 in Virginia. He married Sarah B. Richmond (1832-1869) about 1850. He married Ellen T. ?? about 1870. Ellen died 20 Sep 1900 in Keo, Lonoke county, Arkansas and was buried Keo cem., Keo, Arkansas.  James died 22 June 1902 in Keo, Arkansas and was buried in the Keo cemetery.  His will was recorded in Lonoke county, Arkansas.  His obituary states his children were dead but he had one grandchild living.
  • Sarah A. "Sallie" Britton was born about 1851 in Mississippi.  She married John T. Reed (no record found).  Nothing more is known about them.  Sara died after 1882.
  • Laura M. Britton was born about 1860 in Mississippi.  She married George W. Cornell in 1879 in Lonoke county, Arkansas.  They had a son Chester Britton Cornell in 1881 in Texas.  Laura died after 1882 place unknown.

Son ● Leonidas R. Britton was born about 1844 Mississippi.. Leonidas died July 15, 1863 during the Civil War.  His compiled service record says he died in "Jacksonville" but he probably died near Jackson, Hinds county, Mississippi during the Confederate retreat in mid July 1863.   
Son  ● Lucius C. Britton was born about 1846 Mississippi.  Lucius served in the Civil War and was severely wounded in the leg at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 where he was captured and spent the rest of the war in various hospitals and was furloughed near the end of the war.  After his return to Mississippi he married Elizabeth Phillips, June 29, 1871 in Desoto county, Mississippi.  The 1885 Mississippi Census of "Educable Children" lists three of his children: John Briton (12), Roxie Briton (10) and Willie Briton (male 9).  Lucius died after 1885.
